CKAS Mechatronics Pty Ltd and ADAS (Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme) are together producing and marketing the World's first and only Commercial Diving Supervisor Simulator, the DSS-100. The DSS-100 is a fully automatic computerised simulator for the Commercial Diving Industry, and replicates all aspects of Dive, Compression Chamber and Life Support Systems Supervision. The technology to build the DSS-100 was sourced primarily from the flight simulation industry, and now for the first time, the commercial diving industry can take great benefit in the introduction of world leading simulation technology to:

  • increase safety and protect lives
  • reduce downtime and online training, and
  • optimise dives to save money.

The DSS-100 comes in several configurations, and can be customised to meet a client's specific needs.

Physical Configuration

The DSS -100 is housed in a customised 20 foot, high cube shipping container, and is separated into three (3) compartments internally. The container has a middle section which includes the entry and the Instructor Operating Stations (IOS) for running the simulations. On the left and right hand sides are the simulation "bays" which contain the high fidelity simulator hardware for Air Dive Control , Closed Bell Dive Control or Saturation Control (Hyperbaric Life Support Systems). Each DSS-100 can be configured to house 2 of these three supervisor functions in the left and right bays.

The DSS-100 therefore can be configured as:

  • Configuration 1: Air Dive Control and Compression Chamber Simulator + Closed Bell Dive Control Simulator
  • Configuration 2: Air Dive Control and Compression Chamber Simulator + Saturation Control (Life Support Systems) Simulator
  • Configuration 3: Closed Bell Dive Control Simulator + Saturation Control (Life Support Systems) Simulator

Air Dive Control and Compression Chamber Simulator

The Air dive Control and Compression Chamber Simulator can be installed in one of the two available simulator "bays", allowing full simulation of Air Dive operations and Compression Chamber Operations Training. The Air Dive Control Panel has most typical functions commonly seen in these Panels, including (but not limited to):

  • triple source gas supply systems
  • provision for simulating 3 divers in a wet bell
  • digital or analogue pneumofathometers
  • oxygen and carbon dioxide analysers
  • hot water systems
  • dynamic positioning systems
  • simulated video feeds
  • smoke and fire simulation and containment system (includes smoke generator)
  • many standard communication systems.

 

This unit also contains a separate typical Compression Chamber System for accurate and extensive "offline" training for chamber operators.

This unit can be reconfigured to suite a client's specification in terms of placement of systems or reconfiguration of gas network, typically without variation on the base price. The development of new specific systems is also available as an optional extra, however this may effect delivery time and pricing.

Closed Bell Dive (Saturation Dive) Control Simulator

The Closed Bell Dive Control Simulator can be installed in one of the two available simulator "bays", allowing full simulation of Saturation Dive operations. The Closed Bell Dive Control Panel has most typical functions commonly seen in these panels, including (but not limited to):

  • triple Heliox gas supplies
  • provision for simulating 3 divers in a closed bell
  • digital or analogue pneumofathometers
  • oxygen and carbon dioxide analysers
  • hot water systems
  • dynamic positioning systems
  • fully functional reclaim system
  • simulated video feeds
  • smoke and fire simulation and containment system (includes smoke machine)
  • trunk and chamber transfer operations systems
  • many standard communication systems.

This unit can be reconfigured to suite a client's specification in terms of placement of systems or reconfiguration of gas network, typically without variation on the base price. The development of new specific systems is also available as an optional extra, however this may effect delivery time and pricing.

Saturation Control (Hyperbaric Life Support) Simulator

The Saturation Control Simulator can be installed in one of the two available simulator "bays", allowing full simulation of Life Support operations. The Saturation Control Panel has most typical functions commonly seen in these panels, including (but not limited to):

  • multiple Heliox gas supplies
  • provision for simulating multi chamber systems
  • digital or analogue pneumofathometers
  • oxygen and carbon dioxide analysers
  • fully functional reclaim system
  • simulated video feeds
  • smoke and fire simulation and containment system (includes smoke machine)
  • many standard communication systems.

This unit can be reconfigured to suite a client's specification in terms of placement of systems or reconfiguration of gas network, typically without variation on the base price. Simulation Engine and Instructor Operating Station

Simulation Engine

The installed simulator units each utilise the cutting edge "SimCor" software developed by CKAS Mechatronics and are fully automatic in operation as far as simulating the physical environment. This means that gas equations, partial pressures, needle movement, thermodynamics and other physical phenomena are solved by the simulation engine in real time automatically, and do not require human intervention to operate correctly. The SimCor simulation engine delivers an incredibly high fidelity physical representation, and even extremely specific effects such as slight needle deflections when opening valves are introduced by the accurate first principles approach. This technology has been adapted from flight simulation technology, to take advantage of many decades of development in providing a high fidelity real world simulation which is in most cases indistinguishable from the real world operation. Some of the SimCor modules being utilised in the DSS-100 include:

  • Gas Dynamics Module
  • Partial Pressures Module
  • Thermodynamics Module
  • Many other system specific modules (eg, Oxygen Analyser Module, Reclaim Booster Module, etc)

Instructor Operating Station

Irrespective of which simulation unit is being operated (Air Dive, Sat Dive, Life Support), the Instructor Operating Station (IOS) is used to "modify" the external physical environment which will be reflected in the simulation engine, and communicated in the physical hardware for the student to respond. The instructor has full control over the environment being simulated and can change many parameters in real time, or none at all depending on what type of training is being carried out. Some of the typical instructor activities might be:

  • Change Diver 1 depth to be out of dive plan tolerance and observe student supervisor response
  • Communicate with the student supervisor as either divers or on board staff and observe response
  • Initiate a breach in a seal in a Transfer Under Pressure operation and observe response

The simulator also includes an integrated learning management system, which is accessible directly from the simulator instructor screen or student bay touchscreen. This has induction materials and assessment guidance, and can also include company specific documentation such as the diving safety management system.

Scenario Scripting Language

The IOS also features an incredibly versatile and extensive scenario scripting language which allows extremely sophisticated fully automatic training syllabus development by the client (or a third party). All the simulator variables can be manipulated and changed in real time by running a scenario script through the simulator (which can do things like change diver depths, fail certain subsystems, talk to the student supervisor over one of the communication devices, etc) fully automatically and unattended. This scripting language has incredible power when fully utilised, and can easily form the basis of standardised training on the simulator. The scripting language is designed to be utilised by any person with no prior knowledge of computer programming, and the basic and meaningful language and commands can be picked up in a very short time frame, allowing the client to have infinite power over the operation of the simulator.

Standard Features

Irrespective of physical configuration, the DSS-100 has some standard features:

  • Independent operation of the two installed simulation systems. Either of the simulator bays can be operated and instructed independent of the other allowing full utilisation of all the installed hardware
  • Fully air conditioned throughout with the three rooms independently controlled via separate air conditioning units.
  • Fully sealed and lockable container able to withstand harsh environments near the sea.

Inclusions

The following are delivered with each purchase of a DSS-100:

  • DSS-100 unit with two (2) independent simulation systems (configuration 1, 2 or 3) packaged in a custom built 20 foot, high cube shipping container.
  • Several basic fully automatic scenario scripts to start operating the simulator immediately upon client delivery.
  • Full software manual including extensive scenario script writing documentation to allow client to fully utilise the fully automatic capability of the simulator.
  • Back to base online support system for remote diagnosis and assistance from CKAS including webcam link.
  • 12 months faulty and defective part limited warranty.
  • On CKAS site training for client side simulator operators (up to 2 persons for 3 days).
  • On CKAS site training for client side maintenance staff (up to 2 persons for 5 days) to facilitate in house maintenance with remote assistance.
